One of the most common mistakes Arabic learners make is using the wrong preposition after a verb.
In Arabic, many verbs must be followed by a specific preposition.
You cannot change it, and you cannot omit it.
These verb–preposition combinations are fixed expressions in the language.
Learning them will immediately improve the accuracy of your Arabic.
يحتاج إلى — yaḥtāju ilā — to need
أنا أحتاجُ إلى نصيحةٍ.
I need advice.
يشعر بـ — yash‘uru bi — to feel
يشعرُ بالقلق.
He feels anxious.
نجح في — najaḥa fī — to succeed in
نجحَ في المشروع.
He succeeded in the project.
يفكّر في — yufakkiru fī — to think about
أفكّرُ في الحل.
I am thinking about the solution.
يتحدّث عن — yataḥaddathu ‘an — to talk about
يتحدّثُ عن المشكلة.
He talks about the problem.
يبحث عن — yabḥathu ‘an — to search for
أبحثُ عن هاتفي.
I am looking for my phone.
يعتمد على — ya‘tamidu ‘alā — to depend on
يعتمدُ النجاح على الصبر.
Success depends on patience.
يوافق على — yuwāfiqu ‘alā — to agree to
وافقَ على الاقتراح.
He agreed to the suggestion.
يعتذر عن — ya‘taḏiru ‘an — to apologize for
اعتذرَ عن الخطأ.
He apologized for the mistake.
يخاف من — yakhāfu min — to fear
يخافُ من المرتفعات.
He is afraid of heights.
يمرّ بـ — yamurru bi — to pass by / go through
مررتُ بالمتحف.
I passed by the museum.
يشارك في — yushāriku fī — to participate in
شاركَ في الدورة.
He participated in the course.
يحلم بـ — yaḥlumu bi — to dream of
يحلمُ بالنجاح.
He dreams of success.
يستمع إلى — yastami‘u ilā — to listen to
استمعتُ إلى النصيحة.
I listened to the advice.
يثق بـ — yathi qu bi — to trust
أثقُ بصديقي.
I trust my friend.
يهتمّ بـ — yahtammu bi — to care about
يهتمّ بصحته.
He cares about his health.
يتعوّد على — yata‘awwadu ‘alā — to get used to
تعودتُ على الاستيقاظ مبكرًا.
I got used to waking up early.
يشتكي من — yashtakī min — to complain about
يشتكي من الألم.
He complains of pain.
يرغب في — yarghabu fī — to desire
يرغبُ في التعلّم.
He desires to learn.
يبتعد عن — yabta‘idu ‘an — to stay away from
ابتعدَ عن الضوضاء.
He stayed away from the noise.
