One of the first pronunciation rules Arabic learners meet is how to read “Al-” (ال) at the beginning of words.
Sometimes you pronounce the Lām (ل) clearly.
Sometimes the Lām disappears in pronunciation.
Why? Because of Sun Letters and Moon Letters.
What is “Al-” (ال) in Arabic?
“Al-” is the Arabic definite article, like “the” in English.
Example:
الكتاب — al-kitāb — the book
🌙 Moon Letters (Al-Qamariyyah)
With moon letters, you pronounce the Lām (ل) clearly.
Moon letters are:
ا ب ج ح خ ع غ ف ق ك م هـ و ي
Examples
| Word | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| القمر | al-qamar | the moon |
| الكتاب | al-kitāb | the book |
| الباب | al-bāb | the door |
| البيت | al-bayt | the house |
Notice: You hear the L sound.
☀️ Sun Letters (Ash-Shamsiyyah)
With sun letters, the Lām is not pronounced.
Instead, the next letter is doubled (stressed).
Sun letters are:
ت ث د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ل ن
Examples
| Word | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| الشمس | ash-shams | the sun |
| الطالب | aṭ-ṭālib | the student |
| الرجل | ar-rajul | the man |
| الناس | an-nās | the people |
Notice: The letter after Al- is stressed, and L is silent.
Why this rule is important
If you read every word with a clear L, your Arabic will sound unnatural.
This rule makes your pronunciation sound native and correct.
Easy way to remember
- If the letter is strong and sharp → Sun letter ☀️ (hide L)
- If the letter is soft → Moon letter 🌙 (say L)
Practice
Say these pairs aloud:
- البيت vs الشمس
- القلم vs الطالب
Train your ear to hear the difference.
